hey everyone

im starting a small company in my hometown, I%26#039;ve been doing some research on how to start and maintain my own web server. But msot of it sounds almost like gibberish.

i have two machines, a 500mhz IBM Aptiva (old enough for you?) that i would love to use as a low-cost server

on the other hand i havee my spare 3.2 ghz- pentium D HP.

Either can be used as the server, but the IBM either does this or it is trash

Basically, i want to makea webpage Where customers can visit and conteact me (through email ect..) and get information about my company

however, i do not want to pay the big companis Godaddy, to host it

i DO have an always on Satic IP interenet connection, i need help knowing just how to

%26quot;get the computer online%26quot;

any advice?

Hosting my own personal webopage?

I have tried hosting my own server but it is time cosuming and you will have to run your computer 247 which will damage your computer in the long term.

There are cheap reliable hosting providers.

I would like to suggest following webhosting which I use, they are excellent.

http://www.hostmonster.com/track/webhost...

They offer hosting of %26quot;unlimited domains%26quot; and you will get massive webspace of 600000 MB (600 GB ). They only charge $5.95/month and they offer %26quot;a free Domain Name%26quot; and installing service called %26quot;Fantastico%26quot;. By using Fantastico, you could create own forum, photo gallery, shopping cart (e-commerce),your own auction site and your own blogs within few seconds. They also offer %26quot;Free Website Builder%26quot; as well.

Visit the site to check details.

you%26#039;ll first need webserver software. Apache is the most commonly used. You can get apache, mysql (database) and php (for programming if you want) all in one package called easyphp. Find it at:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/quickeas...

You%26#039;ll need a web address. GoDaddy is an inexpensive place to get one.

I%26#039;ve used

http://www.dyndns.com

for years and am very happy. They also provide email services, digital certificates, and so forth.

Depending on the number of %26#039;hits%26#039; you get, you may be able to get by with the 500Mhz system. Webservers are not compute intensive, they are data intensive. My webserver is an old 833MHz Dell system that runs fine (although I%26#039;m running linux). If you%26#039;re planning on doing other things on your systems in addition to the webserver, you may want to consider using the more powerful system. Windows can be a pig, so you may try the smaller system first, then migrate to the larger if necessary.

Good luck!

Other Replys:The person above me gave good advice. I would also recommend using a content management system to save yourself a huge headache.

www.joomla.org

www.xoops.org

And there is another good one that I forgot the name of. Its very basic, but is great for a business that needs very static content. (simple cms?)

Other Replys:And about hosting your website, try to choose a professional service to get rid of the subsequent problems. And also please don閳ユ獩 trust dishonest claims like unlimited hosting space or unlimited bandwidth!
