What is the best way to host a busy website with high traffic?

We are launching a web site that potentially will have high traffic with users registration. Is it better to host it with a web-hosting company or its better to own some space in data centers with some (or lot of) expense?

Any advice with cost and strategy would be appreciated. If i go with web-hosting company which is fast and reliable?

There can be no question that a data center offers the more reliable and secure environment for a website project, but at what cost? Every data center website I have visited does not list their prices, and the pricing structure varied greatly from center to center. I%26#039;m guessing that data centers are not cheap. Web hosting, on the other hand is cheap ( you can get started for about $50 to $100). Outfits like Go daddy, Apollo and Yahoo hosting offer very affordable rates and are pretty much on the same level when it comes to reliability and speed. But if you break down the reasons that make a data center better than a web hosting provider, some of the advantages of the data center don%26#039;t seem too important any more. Both data centers and web hosting providers offer:

-Linux and Windows based platforms.

-Redundant power backup and cooling solutions.

-Tier 1 backbone connections.

-Compatibility with complex languages such as Pearl, PHP, and Python.

Initially, if the website is expected to get a lot of traffic, there is no doubt that a web hosting service will be adequate, and it will keep the startup costs down. If a move is necessary in the future (and it may be if you get the traffic you predict), perhaps a move to a data center may be in order. (moving a website is not as difficult as it sounds. Most hosting providers offer services to assist with the move) If you actually get the traffic you want, I would seriously consider moving to a data center. They have sophisticated fire suppression systems and air conditioning units that offer the best possible up time you can expect. They even incorporate a raised flooring system that negates the risk of static electricity. Even a good web hosting provider will not guarantee %100 up time.

I feel there might be something missing in the Apache configuration / customisation that%26#039;s yet to be done. Also check the winXP firewall settings.

You need to setup port forwarding on your router. By default, most of these cheap plug-and-play routers do not forward incoming ports. Apache by default runs on port 80. You need to allow port 80 to forward to the computer running Apache httpd.

Also, it would be wise to set a static IP address on your LAN router for the computer running Apache, otherwise you will have to constantly update port forwarding each time your IP address changes on your LAN.

I plan on creating a web store using another website where the shopping cart, host domain name, etc would be provided. Do I still need a merchant account? Do I need to incorporate my business or can I sell my products (around 10) on my website? I%26#039;m not going to sell through ebay because I already have some loyal customers but my products are very cheap (around 10 dollars). So what else do I need to do besides creating the website using their software?

No, you don%26#039;t have to incorporate to operate a web store. Many website owners operate as sole proprietor, especially if you are just starting. When the income flow becomes better and the business grows, then you can start rethinking your legal structure and consider incorporating. But it is not necessary at the start.

With every web store, you need a means to accept and process credit card payments - which you can do by having your own merchant account or by using a third party processor such as Paypal. Since everything is going to be provided for you, check with this company if you still need a merchant account or if they will provide it. If they will provide it, check the rates and whether you have the option of using your own merchant account with better rates.

So what else do I need to do besides creating the website using their software?

It seems you will have to use a predefined web template if everything is going to be provided. If not, I suggest you study the big merchants and how the implement the look of their site -- from the colors to the placement of the Buy It Now button to the shopping cart system. The thing you need to do is to market the site, and that can be a full time task.

You may need to open an account with another payment processor but you can do this in your own name (this will be referred to as your merchant account even though you are an individual and not a business). Other than that it really is just creating your website with their software and marketing.

If you have a site, Google will probably find it eventually but to speed things up you can submit it yourself with https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/... That doesn%26#039;t cost a thing but you need a gmail account. You can manually submit it like this to most any search engine or use a submission tool like http://www.webceo.com/ - I use the free version all the time, it submits to multiple search engines at once. It will let you enter keywords and a description as well. (Keywords could be it%26#039;s own question!). Yahoo hosting shouldn%26#039;t effect your google rankings although perhaps it helps your yahoo ranks. Good luck!

It all depends on the type of on-line business you are building and what types of technologies you plan on using. I would suggest looking at a few other hosting providers before you make the jump. You need to think about how your are going to build your HTML pages and with what tools, how much control you want to have with your Search Engine Marketing. If you are planning on selling ecommerce what credit card processor you will use...

As far as submitting getting your site listed in search engines you need to do either:

Directory submission

Get some links from some other websites.

No need to submit through addurl form of google or yahoo and you don%26#039;t need to enter any keywords. Just get some links from other sites. Then search engines will automatically find you.

Yahoo webhosting does not affect ranking.

Anyway, looking at queries like that on a search engine (say google), you will find little. This is one of google%26#039;s many weaknesses -- saturation. Googling for web hosting is utterly useless.

Connecting by a patch will not give you access to the web. You need to get a router. A router will allow you to have your PC%26#039;s connected as a network and feed in an internet line as well.

What OS is the host computer? Windows 2000 %26amp; XP Pro will allow internet sharing over a crossover cable.

If you are running through a router of sometype both computers connect to the router and the router supplies each computer with Internet Access

Other Replys:ah, but what john didnt say was that if you know how to set up the middle computer, you can configure it to forward traffic from the 2nd pc to the internet and back. the easiest way is to use linux as the middle box and google %26#039;packet forwarding%26#039;.... although the caveats are that this requires some technical knowledge and use of a crossover cat5 cable

Other Replys:Use the Network Setup Wizard to enable your Host computer to do ICS or Internet connection Sharing. Just go into the control panel and invoke the network connection wizard. Then follow the steps outlined. In order for other computers (clients) to access the Internet, the Host computer needs to be turned on. If it is shut off the connection for the other computer(s) is also shut off.

I found using a router with my DSL allows for each individual computer its own Internet connection without having to use ICS. It is just so much simpler for each computer to have its own connection. However, if you simply can not afford a router and adapters then your best bet is the ICS. Windows has this built into the operating system.

The Host computer needs two adapters while the client computers only need one. You turn on all the computers and then run the wizard on the Host computer, then run it on each computer you wish to use ICS on.

If you host computer is running at least Windows 2000, then connect this computer to the other computer with a cross-over cable or have both computers connect to a hub or switch.

Next, on the host computer connected to the internet, go to the properties of the network connection (internet connected connection) and enable Connection Sharing.

The other NIC connected on this computer will be set to a static IP (192.168.0.1). This computer will run other serivices that will provide your other computer access to the internet such as DNS Proxy, DHCP Allocator, and NAT.

Leave the other computer as a DHCP Client. The other computer will automatically be configured to use the computer that is connected to the internet as it%26#039;s gateway.

While it may be seconds, it may also be minutes. Also consider the time zone difference. While this may not affect many, if you are a webmaster it can become extremely frustrating.

Myself, I have hosting with a us company that uses only earth-friendly power sources. Wind and sun. There are several things to consider when obtaining good hosting besides price.

Otherwise, someone local to you is definitely easier to deal with. I%26#039;ve seen some web sites that allow you to choose a server that is closest to you. Id like to start a website selling ebooks and as i have average web experiance id like to know of an easy to use, not too pricey(within reason) web hosting company?

Personally, unless you are talking serious money (with Rackspace) I don%26#039;t have a great deal of confidence for English hosts. As has been mentioned, of the UK one, I%26#039;d give www.1and1.co.uk a try.

In America, GoDaddy have ad free web hosting from as little and $3.99 a month (a little over 鎷?). If you buy a domain at the same time you can get a .com for a mere $1.99

One point to strongly bear in mind - if any host wants you to agree to a one year contract first - run away! With monthly billing (and no year long contract) if (when?) things go pear shaped if is far easier to just move to another, hopeflly more professional host.

Trust me on this, from bitter experience, many hosts have rather double standards - if you miss a payment, they get legal. If your website goes down, I can practically guarantee they will weasel out of any responsibility - right down to even admitting they owe you an apology!!!

Anyway, for a poxy $6 (鎷?) including a domain of your choice, monthly billing (from $3.99 a month) I%26#039;d have to say GoDaddy is worth a good look.

Yes, Google does log and weigh IP address location. Your best bet is to get hosting in Singapore and register with all of the local search engines as well as purchase and upload the website to a Singapore top level domain name.

Local domains are expensive too. Hosting companies are expensive due to small business populations. Some even host it in US servers. Your best bet is your content. Find a web host that provides you data on who were logged on, from which sites, keywords they use, how many times your web site is crawled by web robots. Adjust your content accordingly. Get a web-friendly, open source templates such as wordpress. Avoid custom web designers, there are bs artists among them, with designs which are either outdated, impossible to modify, slow, icompatible in many browser platform, expensive.

Linux is an operating system for computers. It serves many of the same purposes as Microsoft Windows, but it%26#039;s engineered differently.

It can often be dowloaded for free (or purchased on CDROM for just a few dollars). It usually comes with a free web server (Apache) bundled right in, which is why so many people suggest it for hosting from home. No licensing fees!

If your computer is old or has any weird hardware pieces (networking, video card) that are not common, it can be a little difficult to use. You won%26#039;t need to find a telco, if you%26#039;re going to colocate. You simply need to find a colo facility, and they will provide the telco for you. This is better for you, in that most colos will have a fat pipe to mulitple telcos and routers that provide redundancy.

I%26#039;m part of a coop that owns a server where we run virtual linux instances under UML, and using this technique we were able to bring our costs down to around $150/year, so I%26#039;d agree the economy is there, if you%26#039;re willing to do the research.

One thing to work out for yourself is how you%26#039;ll handle issues with the box, for example, if it needs a reboot, what if it doesn%26#039;t come back up cleanly and you can%26#039;t get to it?

So if you want I could send you the client, or you could go get one like horde, and then just buy a dedicated server. Install apache, and PHP then you have everything you need. You could host unlimited e-mails (as much as the server could store). Now theres one more problem, but that%26#039;s fixable.

My company can set up somethign like that for you for a small charge, and we could even host the e-mails for you.

Well, it certainly comes close, if not.

You have to bear in mind, though, that the cheapest web hosting in dollar terms may not be the cheapest in terms of stress and being able to work with the people that run it. The cheaper hosts tend to have REALLY iffy staff, so if you get a problem, you end up tearing your hair out. Having said that, *most* hosts I have used have had staff that either treat you like something the dog brought up or like a retarded 2-year old, or both - or just don%26#039;t bother dealing with your problem at all.

The only really helpful techs I have come across so far in the hosting world (and I%26#039;ve been through a few) are the ones here:

Ipowerweb should have told you the DNS information for your web location. If you have a domain, you have to tell the registrar, in this case Yahoo, where to point that name. This is done with the DNS system. You can register your own name servers like dns1.yourdomain.com and dns2.yourdomain.com if Ipowerweb gives you two IPs. Otherwise just point your domain to the ipowerweb dns servers!.

If you check the ipowerweb help section you will see they use

ns1.ipower.com and ns2.ipower.com so you can just go to Yahoo and point your domain to those two servers. It takes anywhere from a few hours to 72 hours for that information to %26quot;propagate%26quot; across the web.

Thats all you have to do.

I am not interested in paying monthly fees. I simply want to buy the ActiveX or whatever module/programming is required and move on... I am looking for something that is strictly web-based so please do not offer solutions that involve the installation of client or host software. It%26#039;s very surprising to me that no one appears to be giving WebEx a run for their money. We have a Microsoft Windows 2000 Server environment with approximately 8 Windows 2000 servers and 80 workstations.

We are not running Active Directory or any domain based policies. Its a simple network really. We currently use Outlook 2003 with POP3 email that is hosted by our ISP.

We want to deploy Microsoft Exchange server so that Outlook 2003 can use more advanced features like calendaring, etc. We need to also have Outlook Web Access.

Do we need to convert to active directory, or can I do this without having to convert right now?

You must have active directory to use exchange server 2000 or 2003. It is not very difficult to install active directory especially if you don%26#039;t plan to use group policies but if you do decide to deploy it I would recommend using a 2003 server as the domain controller as there are many improvements to active directory from 2000.

Sounds more like a permissions problem on your website. Your PHP files are likely the vulnerable spot, as scripts are easy to grab and change if the permissions are not proper.

All your files should be restricted to execution by your website, and not be accessible to the outside world. I see many sites where their script files are located in a directory that is accessible via an anonomous ftp, which allows someone to go in and modify the scripts and files.

Get someone who has experience with such things to help you. It%26#039;s not something I can explain thoroughly here.

alphanumeric passwords are good, but are easy targets for a good password dictionary or brute forcer. i reccomend a sentence, that includes numbers with no spaces. it is easy to remember, and almost impossible to crack.

EX: theraininspainfallsmainlyinjunespecifica...

you can shorten/elongate but you get the idea.

Where I see it most often is people who hire the cheapest programmer they can get. Web designers are NOT programmers (and programmers, frankly, make lousy web designers) When I see this happen, I sometimes see these same people go right back hiring someone to %26quot;fix%26quot; the problem for the same low rates. I generally laugh at these people, they get what they deserve.

Your problem is most likely in the PHP script itself, the attacker may not have even logged into your account.

Anything with %26quot;file upload%26quot; capability is the first place to check, especially if uploaded files can be accessed directly through the web server. (for example, uploading a %26quot;.php%26quot; file and then accessing it in a browser,

NOTE: this can manifest itself for %26quot;image uploading%26quot; tools or mp3 file uploads. Make sure anything uploaded is run through a series of filters before being made available to a web server.

Other places to check are form inputs, anything that gets %26quot;eval%26quot;%26#039;d is suspect, finally, anything that involves file paths that are controlled via form variables.

You%26#039;ll probably read about %26quot;SQL injections%26quot;, doesn%26#039;t sound like that is what happened here.

Security is, unfortunately, something that is overlooked by cheap, low-rate programmers (they have to cut corners to be so cheap)

Secondly, as I said, web masters are NOT programmers. They%26#039;re good at layout and making things look really good. Programming on the other hand, is a different thing.

Windows can be a pig, so you may try the smaller system first, then migrate to the larger if necessary.
